RAY HAWTHORNE Services Held

Ray S. Hawthorne, a resident and businessman in Winterset for many years, died at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset last Friday, July 26, 1974. He was 80 years of age.

Mr. Hawthorne was born at College Springs, Iowa, on February 5, 1894, the son of J.R.S. Hawthorne and Martha Thompson Hawthorne. He was married to Agnes A. Berry at Clarinda, Iowa on January 2, 1919.

Mr. Hawthorne had lived in Madison County for the past 19 years. He retired as operator of the Winterset Produce in 1960.

A member of the first United Presbyterian Church, Mr. Hawthorne was a veteran of World War I, and belonged to the American Legion. He was a past Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge, a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and an elder of the First United Presbyterian Church at Adair and Winterset.

Mr. Hawthorne is survived by his wife, Agnes, and by three children: Mrs. Bernal (Virginia) Wedemeyer of Des Moines; Mrs. Marcia Biggs of Exira, Iowa; and Robert Hawthorne of Macomb, Illinois. Nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren also survive, as well as two sisters; Mrs. Malcolm (Hallie) Finley of San Diego, California; and Mrs. Margaret Minklein of Palm Beach, California.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Hawthorne; and by two sisters, Mrs. Nellie McClelland and Elsie Hawthorne.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 29, at the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset, with the Rev. Alan Parker officiating. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.

McClelland of Hastings, Nebraska, Rev. and Mrs. John DeBurg and Mrs. Dixie Schirm of Walnut, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Brentnoll and Mrs. Robert Garland of Ames, Mrs. Rene Condon, Barbara Condon and Kimberly Condon of Storm Lake.
