December 21, 1919John P. Curtis
On May 15, 1903 at Dubuque, Iowa John Patterson came to brighten the home of George and Ida Curtis. When less than a year old, he was deprived of his mother’s love when she was called to the Heavenly home, and at the age of 18 months he endured his little life in the members of the home of his aunt, Mrs. A. B. Chamberlain, where he made his home until the father remarried in September, 1910. In January, 1914, his father was killed and John was again welcomed into the Chamberlain home, where he was (unreadable) quiet, industrious boy.
Two years ago, during the meetings at Worthington, held by Rev. Carl Clark, he expressed his desire to become a child of God and joined the church at that place, and later, along with other members of the family, removed the church letter to the Methodist church in Winterset. His sickness, which began a year ago, kept him away from church services. Many times during his suffering he asked for a chapter to be read from his testament.
He passed from this life Feb. 21, 1919 at the age of 11 years, 9 months, and 6 days. He leaves to cherish the memory of his sweet life two sisters, Esther and Ruth; a half brother, Hubert; his aunt and uncle, an aged grandmother, Mrs. Ella Patterson of California; and his stepmother, Mrs. Edith Curtis of Cedar Falls; besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of A. B. Chamberlain by Rev. Carl Clark of the Worthington church and Rev. Jackson Giddens of the Winterset Methodist church. The remains were taken to Monticello, Iowa, and laid to rest beside his father. Thus another gracious jewel shines from the home shore.
