Rev. John Ackerman, Waterloo

The Rev. John H. Ackerman, 87, died Dec. 5, 2003, at the Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 8, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery.

The Rev. John Ackerman was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Waterloo to John H. and Lottie (Dusk) Ackerman. In 1934, he was united in marriage to Verna I. Warnecke. He later married Marlys C. Westphal Stroup on Dec. 1, 1962 in Dakota City, Neb. He attended Open Bible College in Des Moines and served at various Open Bible churches. He later was employed with the Waterloo Street Department from 1959 until 1976. In 1980, he graduated from Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. John was a pastor at United Methodist churches in three different locations in Iowa, including the Macksburg United Methodist Church. He retired in 1985. He also served as a chaplain at Allen Hospital for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Marion, Larry and Ralph; and two sisters, Vernita Block and Mary Lou Rogers.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys of Waterloo; two sons, John W. Ackerman of Cedar Falls and Guy R. Ackerman of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Kathy J. Helmrichs of Evansdale; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Parrott & Wood Funeral Home.
