EDITH GILLESPIE, Greenfield

Services for Edith Gillespie, 100, were held Tues., March 24 at First Presbyterian Church in Greenfield with the Rev. David Kincaide officiating. Eastern Star services were also held. Mrs. Gillespie died of a heart ailment March 20, 1992, at Adair County Memorial hospital.

She was born April 10, 1891 in Adair County to Robert S. and Rose (Busby) Power and graduated from Greenfield High School and attended Teachers College, Cedar Falls, for one year. She married Carnot Jewett Dunham August 20, 1920 and moved to Anaheim Calif. for seven years. Her husband preceded her in death. She retured to Greenfield and the following year was elected Adair County Recorder, an office she served for six years. She married Raymond Robert Gillespie June 26, 1937 and settled on a farm in Madison County. He was elected State Senator, and she traveled with him on his assignments. After his death, she moved to Greenfield and continued operation of the Gillespie farms throughout her life time.

She was past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, president of P.E.O. and Progressive Club, president of the Busienss and Professional Women's Club, active member of Adair County Women's Republican Party and an active member of First Presbyteran Church, Greenfield.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, a sister and three brothers.

Surviving are a son, Jewett Dunham of Ames; a stepson, Cecil Gillespie of Winterset; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Steen Funeral Home, Greenfield, handled arrangements; and burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
