Willard C. Smith

EARLHAM-A funeral for Willard C. Smith, 73, of Earlham was held July 25, 1994 at the Earlham United Methodist Church, with burial following at Penn Center Cemetery near Earlham. Mr. Smith died of a heart ailment on July 23 at Madison county Hospital at Winterset.

The son of Raymond and Grace Cade Smith, he was born near Earlham on Oct. 13, 1920. He married Vina Emmons on Nov. 16, 1942. He farmed in the area until 1962, and he also drove a rock truck for several years. He owned and operated the Smith’s By-Lo grocery store for 10 years. After selling the business in 1973, he became a carpenter until health problems forced his retirement in 1992. Mr. Smith was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge until it was dissolved.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandra; a son, Richard; and an infant grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Vina; two daughters, Joyce Egemo of Story City and Connie Bartlett of Liberty, Mo.; a sister, Mabel Frederick of Norwalk; a brother, Dale Smith of Earlham; and seven grandchildren.

EARLHAM-A funeral for Willard C. Smith, 73, of Earlham died on July 23, 1994 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital. Services were held July 25, 1994 at the Earlham United Methodist Church, with burial at Penn Center Cemetery near Earlham. The Rev. Harold Koughn presided.

He was born in rural Earlham to Raymond and Grace (Cade) Smith, on Oct. 13, 1920. He married Vina Smith on Nov. 16, 1942. He was a life-long resident of Madison County and retired from the carpenter business in 1991. Mr. Smith was a member of the Earlham United Methodist Church and the Earlham Odd Fellows.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one son, and a grandson.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joyce Egemo of Story City and Connie Bartlett of Liberty, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Waltz; one sister, Mabel Frederick of Norwalk; one brother, Dale Smith of Earlham and seven grandchildren.
