Bernice Helmers, Marion

Bernice L. Helmers, 79, of Marion, died Oct. 12, 1996 at her daughter's residence in Marion. Funeral services were Oct. 14 at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion. Pastor Jerry Parker officiated the services. Graveside services were held later that day at the Winterset Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 31, 1917 in Saskatchewan, Canada to John A. and Theresa (Vogel) Lutz. She married Kenneth R. Helmers on Nov. 17, 1938 in Cooperstown, N.D. She assisted her husband in the operation of a jewelry store in Lisbon, N.D. for 21 years. She was activity coordinator at Villa Nursing Home in Winterset for 21 years before retiring in 1980. She was a member of Squaw Creek Baptist Church in Marion and was active in the church choir.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister; and one brother.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Bernadine Youel and husband Kenneth of Marion and Marylin Woodruff and husband Robert of DeKalb, Ill.; one son, Darrell Helmers of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother Frank Lutz and wife Mavis of Bozeman, Mont.; 14 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Mercy c/o Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids or Squaw Creek Baptist Church, Marion.
