Earlham Echo - January 1968

Final rites for Susan Marston were conducted Tuesday, January 2, at 2:00 p.m. in the Earlham Presbyterian church. Rev. Eugene Kinney was in charge of the service. W. F. Price was the soloist accompanied by Lucille Schalkle at the piano.

Phyllis Werts and Pauline Godby assisted with the flowers. Casket bearers were B. G. Harris, Graham Godby, Claire Jones, Marion Compton, Loyal Werts and Earl Schalkle. John Godby and Lester Aldrich ushered.

Interment was in the Penn Center cemetery.

Susan Waters Marston

Mrs. Susan Waters Marston of Earlham died Sunday, December 31, 1967 at Madison County Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She celebrated her 100th birthday on October 2, 1967.

Mrs. Marston was born at Frankville, Iowa October 2, 1867. She was married in Postville, Iowa on October 11, 1887 to Jasper E. Marston. They moved here in 1893 and farmed until his death in 1934.

During her 70 years residence in Madison County she was active in Farm Bureau, Extension, WCTU, Garden Club and Chautauqua Club. She was a dedicated member and Sunday School teacher at Penn Center Methodist church until she moved to Earlham where she was a member of the Presbyterian church. She was awarded a special membership in the Methodist Woman's Society of Christian Service.

She lived in her little house on Main Street until a few years ago keeping house and caring for her garden and many flowers. At the time of her death, she was living at Madison Manor in Winterset.

Mrs. Marston is survived by four children: J. Harry of Boone, Ruth Crawford of Postville, Theodore of Sparks, Nevada, and Gale of Earlham. She also had twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
