Mary Evalyn Harris, 72, of Earlham, died of a heart attack Thursday, October 30, 1986 at Winterset Care Center North where she had been a resident since March 10, 1986.

Evalyn, the oldest child of Virgil and Marbel Coffin, was born in Redfield, Iowa, on March 18, 1914. She graduated from Waukee High School in 1933. She was united in marriage to David Harris on September 8, 1934. They spent most of their married life in the Earlham area.

On Easter Sunday, 1980, Evalyn was baptized into the Early Chapel Church. Her church was a source of great comfort to her and she was as active as her health would permit.

Although in poor health, she brought sunshine into the lives of others. She will be remembered as a woman of great courage and deep faith.

Evalyn was anticipating coming home to Madison Manor in Earlham on October 31. However, before this was realized, she was called to her Eternal Home.

Surviving are her devoted and loving husband, David; three brothers, Howard of Adel, Dean of Menlo and Lyle of Des Moines; two sisters, Leona Peterson of Guthrie Center and Ruth Andersen of Des Moines, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were conducted November 3, 1986 at the Early Chapel Church, Earlham, Iowa, with the Reverend Cheri Celner officiating. Soloist was Marilyn Adams, accompanied at the organ by Irene Clague. Pallbearers were Dale Smith, Charles Hochstetler, Francis Faust, Russell Leeper, Paul Turner and James Williamson. Honorary pallbearers were Curtis Bruett, John Clague, Willard England, Edward

Winterset Madisonian - November 1986

Mary Evalyn Harris, 72, of Earlham died of a heart attack Thursday, Oct. 30 at Winterset Care Center North in Winterset. Services were held Monday at Early Chapel Church. A committal service was held Monday at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Mrs. Harris was born in Redfield. She was a homemaker and a member of Early Chapel Church.

Survivors include her husband, David; three brothers, Howard Coffin of Adel, Lyle Coffin of Des Moines and Dean Coffin of Menlo; and two sisters, Leona Peterson of Guthrie Center and Ruth Andersen of Des Moines.
