Ellen Bane Root, 94, of Winterset died Nov. 24, 2005, at Winterset Care Center South.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Ellen Root was born Nov. 5, 1911 to John R. and Gertrude E. (Wright) Atkins of rural Adel and was a 1930 graduate of Adel High School. On Oct. 8, 1931, she married Neal D. Bane. He preceded her in death. She later married Lester O. Root on May 23, 1965. Ellen was an area resident for most of her life. She had taught in rural schools in Dallas and Madison counties and retired from Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1972. She was an active member of the Winterset First United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Fideles Sunday School Class, Iris Club, Tops Club, and the Democrat Club.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; a brother, John Atkins; a sister Hazel Phearman; a stepdaughter, Shirley Jurgensen; and one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Bane of Urbandale; two daughters, Mary Louise DeVault of Winterset and Barbara Bodwell of Ewing, Mo.; four stepchildren, Naomi Hill, Lois Priest, Leslie Root and Carol Barnes; two sisters, Maxine Handel of Mr. Vernon, Ind., and Martha Hartmann of Bend, Ore.; and 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, 20 step grandchildren and 44 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
