February, 1970Last rites for Sp/4 Robert C. Smith were conducted Thursday, February 12, at the Early Chapel Christian Church (Disciples).
The 20 year old soldier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Smith, entered the Army on February 18, 1969 and had been in Vietnam since last July.
Rev. Gerald Zanker and Rev. William Dilsaver conducted the service. Music was provided at the organ by Mrs. C. S. Mapes. Mrs. Lester Piatt, Mrs. Edward Hircock, Mrs. James Allsup and Mrs. Vern Ahnen cared for the flowers. Active military personnel from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas escorted the casket and provided a full military farewell to their comrade.
Obituary
Robert Carl Smith, son of Lloyd and Carol McCarthy Smith, was born July 16, 1949 at Earlham, Iowa. He was killed instantly February 7, 1970 while serving his country in Vietnam at the age of 20 years, 6 months and 22 days.
He spent his entire life living in the Early Chapel community. His family have always lived on the Smith farm in Jackson township.
Bob, as he was called by all his many friends, attended the Earlham Community School, graduating with the class of 1968.
During his high school years, he was active in FFA work, serving as an officer during his junior and senior years.
Robert was a member of the Early Chapel Christian Church (Disciples) where military funeral services were held on Thursday, February 12, with burial in the Penn Center cemetery.
His family who survives him are his parents, four brothers and one sister at home--Bill, Mike, Danny, Mark and Diana--and a sister, Mrs. Steve Strong of Viola, Iowa. Also surviving Mrs. Susie Smith; fiancee, Miss Penny Wright of Waukee; many other relatives and a host of friends.
