Earlham Echo - July 1958

The long and useful life of Perry Ernest Rose came to its close, Thursday afternoon, July 17, 1958, in the Winterset Memorial Hospital at the age of 91 years and eight days.

Perry, as he was called by many, was born in Madison county on July 9, 1867, and was the youngest son of Henry and Matilda Payton Rose. He was the last survivor of one of the pioneer families--father, mother, five brothers and four sisters having preceded him in death.

On November 26, 1891, he was married to Maude de Clercq. This happy union continued fifty-four years, until her death on March 24, 1949.

He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Mac W. Junkin of Earlham; Mrs. Peter Anderson of Des Moines; Mrs. Harold Ganoe of Jefferson, Iowa; one son, Russell L. Rose of Jefferson City, Missouri; eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Most of his life was spent in Madison county, with the exception of one year in Council Bluffs; then ten years in Pierre, South Dakota, where he was in the harness and saddlery business. He followed the same occupation in De Soto for some time. In 1912, the family moved to Earlham where Mr. Rose continued in his business and later served as Postmaster for several years, after which he acted as Clerk of the District Court of Madison county, and later was employed by the State Tax Commission.

He was a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, and a member of the Presbyterian church, faithfully attending services as long as his health permitted.

Mr. Rose's primary concern was his family and there he lavished his affection. He was vitally interested in the affairs of the community, but whatever his vocation, he brought to it both efficiency and dignity.

His friends were legion, and in his later years, he cheerfully greeted them, old and young, as he took his daily walk.

Age made little difference to Mr. Rose, for he himself stayed young in heart.

Contented and appreciative of the blessings of each day, he enjoyed a rich and fruitful life.
