Walter Mapes

EARLHAM-A funeral for Walter Eugene Mapes, 89, of Earlham was held June 13 at the Bear Creek Friends Church in rural Earlham. Mr. Mapes died of pneumonia June 11 at the Madison county Hospital in Winterset.

The son of Harrold Vane and Lavinia Jones Mapes, he lived on farms near Dexter, Winterset and Earlham. He attended Bear Creek Country School and Earlham High School. Due to his father’s death he did not finish school and began farming his family’s farm.

On March 29, 1929 he was united in marriage to Almeda Curts. Together they farmed and raised their daughter Kathryn in the Earlham community. He attended the Bear Creek Friends Church in rural Earlham.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alma; his parents; and two sisters, Mary and Bernice.

Survivors include daughter Kathryn Kessler of Newton; one brother, Francis of Winterset; two grandsons, Paul and David Kessler of Newton, and many nieces and nephews.
