John Mark Haines, 16-year old son of John Lewis and Karen Hollingsworth Haines, died Saturday, December 15, 1979, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. John was a muscular dystrophy poster child and had helped each year with the Jerry Lewis Telethon appearing on local television shows with Gov. Robert Ray, Des Moines Mayor Richard Olson and Mary Brubaker.
Born on December 12, 1963 in Winterset, he was a student in the Winterset schools, attended the First Christian Church and was a member of Boy Scouts of America.
Surviving are his parents; a sister, Sarah Ann Haines at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Holligsworth of Winterset, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Haines of Wintersest, and Mrs. Emily Haines of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Stephen Ray.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, at Collins Funeral Home. Officiating were Rev. David Livingston, Rev. Alan Parker and Kenneth Helmers. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.
