Keith Black, son of R. J. Black of St. Charles, was killed Friday, by the accidental discharge of his own gun. Keith and his father and Ed Smith of St. Charles and his son Earl had gone to Squaw Creek to fish. During the afternoon, the boys decided they would shoot turtles. While Keith was trying to shoot one, in some unknown manner, the gun was discharged, the bullet entering his left eye. He was immediately taken to the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, but died within a few hours.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church in St. Charles, Sunday afternoon, and he was buried in the cemetery west of town. He is survived by his father and mother, two brothers and two sisters. The boy was twenty years old and the community was shocked to hear of his sudden death.
