Death of John McClelland

John L. McClelland, an old soldier of this county, died Monday, Oct. 1st at his home in Peru, after a severe illness of several days, resulting from a stroke of apoplexy the previous Saturday. Mr. McClelland, came to this county in 1867 and settled in Scott township. In 1875, he was married to Ruth B. Johnson, and they moved to Peru in 1888, where they have since made their home. He is survived by one brother, W. H. McClelland of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Peru, Wednesday, Oct. 3rd.

John L. McClelland was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania on Nov. 15, 1842, then moved to Burlington, Iowa, where he lived for several years. In 1862 he enlisted in the First Iowa Cavalry, where he served until the close of the war.

In 1867 he came to Madison county and on Nov. 11, 1872 was married to Ruth B. Johnson. He moved to Peru in 1888 where he has resided until his death, with the exception of three years spent in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

He united with the United Presbyterian church, Dec. 31, 1875 under the pastorate of Rev. C. T. McCaughan and has lived a devoted Christian life.

He leaves to mourn his death one brother, W. H. McClelland of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; three nieces, Lizzie Wright and Mrs. E. E. Baker of Flint, Mich., and Mrs. G. W. Hann of Winterset; two nephews, C. W. Wright of Winterset and Will McClelland, Jr. of St. Joseph, Mo., and a number of great nieces and nephews.
