George Donald Letz

George Donald Letz was born to Richard E. and Marguarite McIntyre Letz on July 2, 1905 in Adair County. His youth was spent in Adair and Madison Counties as the family moved from place to place. Don attended the Winterset High School.

On September 14, 1927, he was united in marriage to Mildred Ilene White. The Lord blessed this union with three sons and three daughters.

Work seemed to be Don's ambition and hobby as he spent 20 years farming in the Central Iowa area. He was also employed by the Earlham Schools and he worked for 20 years for the United Building Center of Earlham and 5 years for the Solar Aircraft Company of Des Moines. Don was an outdoorsman and he loved carpentry.

On August 22, 1971 he became united in marriage to Martha Harris in Mitchellville. Since he had retired, they made their home in Earlham. This retirement was interupted, however, with employment for the city of Earlham.

Following s serious illness and hospitalization over an extended period of time, Don passed away from this life on December 2, 1980, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Surviving him, are his wife Martha and his six children: Mrs. Frances Gowin of DeSoto; Mrs. Francene Pierce of Van Meter; Duane of Iowa City, Larry of Spencer; Dwight of Abliene, Texas, currently serving in the USAF in Osan City, Korea; Mrs. Margaret Payne of Earlham and his step-daughter, Rita Myers of Lemoore, California.

Also surviving are two brothers, Clarence of Des Moines and Dale of Winterset and two sister, Mrs. Alice Arnold of Winterset and Mrs. Byrl Armbrest of Des Moines.

Fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandson also survive.
