DAVID MARQUARDT DIES AT 75 YEARS

Death Occurs at Des Moines Hospital After Month As Patient There

David H. Marquardt, prominent resident of the Van Meter community, died Friday, Sept. 14, at a Des Moines hospital. He was 75 years of age and had been a patient at the hospital since Aug. 13.

A life-long resident of Jefferson Township, he was president of the Madison county Farm Mutual Insurance association of Winterset. He was a leader of school district affairs in his community, having served 27 years as a member of the board of directors there. He was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran church in Jefferson township, serving as elder and trustee for a number of years.

Mr. Marquardt was the eldest son of Herman and Katherine Marquardt, and was born in Jefferson township, south of Van Meter, on Feb. 8, 1887. On Jan. 21, 1914, he was married to Augusta L. Niendorf. His life was spent in farming, until failing health forced his retirement.

He had served on the board of directors of the Farm Mutual Insurance association since 1937, and had been president of the board since 1945.

Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Fern Kneuper of Van Meter; a grandchild, Karen Kay Kneuper; two brothers, Oscar and Alfred Marquardt.

Funeral services were held Monday from Trinity Lutheran church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. E. A. Breckholz.

David Henry Marquardt, eldest son of Herman and Katherine Marquardt, was born on Feb. 8, 1887, on a farm in Jefferson Township, Madison County, near Van Meter, Iowa. He was baptized in infancy and was confirmed on April 8, ----- in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church near Van Meter. He was a lifelong active member of this church, becoming a ------- member in 1914 and later as elder and trustee for a number of years. He prepared and maintained the plat book of the Trinity Lutheran cemetery.

On January 21, 1914, he was married to Augusta Lucy Niendorf by the Rev. E. A. Brauer. One daughter, Fern Maxine, was born to this union.

Mr. Marquardt spent his entire life on a farm south of Van Meter and was engaged in farming until failing health forced retirement.

At an early age he started helping his father write insurance for the Farmers Mutual Life Insurance Association of Winterset and also Iowa Mutual ---- in Des Moines. He served on the board of directors of the former firm since 1937. In 1915 he was elected president of the board, an office which he held until his death.

He served on the Van Meter Board of Education twenty-seven years and took an active part in other community affairs.

He entered Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines on August 13, 1962, and fell asleep in Christ on September 14, 1962, at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 6 days. It appeared that he was spared intense pain during the final days of his life.

Mr. Marquardt is survived by his only daughter, Mrs. Fern Kuper, and her husband Herman; one grandchild, Karen Kay Kuper; two brothers, Oscar and Alfred; and many other relatives and friends. His wife, Augusta, preceded him in death in 1941.
