Wednesday, April 19, 1916After many weeks of suffering, borne with rare fortitude, Mrs. Sarah Lucas died at her home on East Jefferson Street on Saturday morning. A devoted Christian mother, a loyal neighbor and friend has finished her work here, leaving behind comforting memories of duties well and thoroughly performed.
Mrs. Lucas has been for many years a familiar figure in a large number of Winterset homes, where her culinary skill and executive ability, made her an invaluable factor in the matter of the social life of the town. With the knowledge that Mrs. Lucas was in one's home, a hostess might enjoy a day of entertaining, feeling that the most elaborate dinner would be served in a perfect manner. Such abilities are unusual and were widely appreciated and recognized by her scores of friends.
To mother six children, all grown to maturity, is a sufficient testimonial of her self sacrificing life and to these children, all of whom survive her, her memory will be a splendid and stimulating one.

Wednesday, April 19 1916MRS. GEORGE LUCAS
Sarah Emily Iler was born north of Pella in Marion county, Iowa, in November 1856. Her parents died while she was young. She came to Winterset when a young woman and was married to George Lucas on November 2, 1875. Of this marriage there were born six children all of whom are living: Mrs. J. H. Kirby, Oscar Lucas, Clarence Lucas, Edna Lucas and Mrs. Earl Welch, all of Madison county and Mrs. Fred Shearer of Portland, Oregon, all of whom were with their mother in the last hours of her life, except Mrs. Shearer.
The deceased also left surviving her two brothers, Warren Iler of Macksburg and Alonzo Iler of Hebron, Nebr. Aside from these she also left surviving her 18 grand children and one great grand child and numerous other relatives.
Her last days were marked by great bodily suffering which continued up to a short time of her death, which occurred at her home in Winterset at 5:15 on Saturday morning, April 15, 1916. During the last night of her life, she was much in prayer that her suffering might be lessened and the last few hours were passed in greater quiet and peace than had been hers for many days and she died with an abiding faith in her salvation through the saving power of her Lord and Master, Jesus Christ.
The funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, B. B. Burton, at the home of her son, Oscar Lucas, Monday at 3 o'clock, with interment in Rock City cemetery.
