ELLEN WIEDMANN DOOLEY, Martensdale

Ellen I. Dooley, 79, of Martensdale died Oct. 28, 2004, at Westview Care Center in Indianola.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Nov. 1, at St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Church near Cumming with Father Tom Dooley celebrating. Burial was at St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Cemetery.

Ellen Dooley was born Oct. 11, 1925, in Madison County to Thomas J. and Agnes C. (Donahoe) Wiedmann. She was a graduate of Patterson High School. On Feb. 7, 1949, she married Jim Dooley at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. Ellen worked for Equitable Life Company in Des Moines for a time and, along with her husband, co-owned and ran Dooley’s Tavern in West Des Moines for 10 years. She also founded and operated the Bread Shed, serving fried bread at the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival for 30 years. She was a member of the Assumption Parish in Churchville where she was active in the Altar and Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Strable and Alice Harkin; two brothers, Thomas Wiedmann and Pat Wiedmann; and one grandson, Thomas Gehringer.

She is survived by her husband, Jim, of Martensdale; 10 daughters, Terri Henson of Martensdale, Dee Armstrong of Adel, Joanne Hartman of Mediapolis, Nancy Ross of Van Meter, Carol Weltner of Sumner, Denise Dooley of Albuquerque, N.M., Rosemary Allsup and Jodi Murphy, both of Winterset, and Ginger Tribby and Margie Gehringer, both of St. Marys; three sons, Mick Dooley of Lexington, Ky., Kevin Dooley of Denver, Colo., and Tim Dooley of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Margaret McLaughlin of Cumming; and 28 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset
