August 1960JESSE H. PARKINS DIES AT 88 YEARS
Jesse H. Parkins, long-time resident of this community, died at Memorial hospital in Winterset this Wednesday, July 27, at the age of 88 years.
Mr. Parkins was a native of Oskaloosa where he was born Aug. 13, 1871.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Silverthorn and Mrs. Earl Rhoads, both of Winterset. He also leaves two grandchildren and five great grand-children.
Funeral services will be held this Friday at 2 p.m. from the Anderson-Wilson Funeral home. Burial will be made in the McDonald cemetery.

Thursday, August 11, 1960Jesse Howard Parkins, son of John and Elizabeth Jones Parkins, was born near Oskaloosa, Iowa, August 13, 1871 and passed on to his eternal rest at the Madison Co. Memorial Hospital at Winterset July 27. He would have been 89 years of age August 13.
When he was a small child he moved with his parents and brothers to a farm in Jefferson twp. where he spent his childhood and early manhood.
In early life he united with the Evangelical United Brethren church and he attended services at that church while residing in that community.
Farming was always his occupation until his health failed, then he moved to Winterset where he spent the last fourteen years of his life.
Howard as he was familiarly called by his neighbors and friends, was one of nine children, the parents and six brothers have preceded him in death.
On November 29, 1893 Howard was united in marriage to Eva L. Bowlsby. To this union three children were born, two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Marie Silverthorn and Mrs. Bessie E. Rhoads of Winterset and a son Glenn who preceded him in death at the age of four years in 1907; also a son-in-law Glenn Silverthorn Sr. in 1940.
The first six years of his married life was spent in the Worthington community, later moving to the Ord community where he and his family resided for several years. They attended the Ord New Hope Church while there.
Howard and his family spent one year in Webster twp. and three years in Grand River twp. before returning to Lincoln twp. where they spent many more years.
Howard always enjoyed visiting with his neighbors, relatives and friends. He was patient and thoughtful throughout his long illness caused by cancer.
Those who hold him in fond and cherished memory are his two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Marie Silverthorn and Mrs. Bessie E. Rhoads, his son-in-law Earl Rhoads, his two grandsons, Glenn Silverthorn and wife Ila, Philip Silverthorn and wife Jean, his five great grandchildren, Linda, JoAnn, Beverly, Jack and Mark Silverthorn of near Earlham, his sister Mrs. Allie Schoen, his brother-in-law Paul Schoen of Hosleah, Florida, and a half-brother John Parkins and wife Edna of near Creston, a cousin L. P. Eginoire and wife Lois of Lorimor; also several nephews, nieces and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Anderson-Wilson Funeral Home conducted by Rev. John Porath of the Winterset Methodist church. The organist was Mrs. Paul Chestnut and the soloist Mrs. Gene L. Wilson. The casket bearers were Glenn Jickling, Forrest Jordan, John Horras, Guy Moore, Carl Wagner and Carl Haymond. Interment was made in the North McDonald cemetery in Jefferson twp.
