Almost a Centennarian

There departed this life at the residence of her son-in-law, V. L. Callison, of Monroe township, Friday, March 8, one of the best known women in this county, and probably the oldest, Mrs. Arethusa Boling, at the advanced age of 98 years, 3 months and 19 days.

Her maiden name was Lovell. She was born in Surrey County, North Carolina, November 19, 1802. In 1820 she was married to Bluford Boling. In 1836 they removed to Putnam county, Indiana, where they resided until 1855, when they removed to Madison county, Iowa. In 1866 Mr. Boling died.

Mrs. Boling was the mother of twelve children, nine of whom are still living. Death was due to mere wearing out by old age, no disease of any kind afflicting her.

Obituary

Arthusa Lovell was born in Serrah county, North Carolina November 19, 1802. She was married to Buford Boling in 1820; he died Jan. 28, 1866.

They moved from North Carolina in 1830 to Putnam county, Indiana, and in 1855 came to Madison county where she lived until the time of her death, March 8, 1901, being 98 years, 3 months and 19 days old. She was the mother of twelve children, nine of whom are living.

When young she joined the Christian church and has always tried to live and do what she believed to be right. When asked a short time before her last sickness if she was ready to meet death, she said, “Yes, I am prepared to go at any time.” Grandma Boling was a general favorite among the young people, and when able to work was never better pleased than to be doing something for their enjoyment. She was known by all who knew her to be generous and kind-hearted, sharing with those who were in need the last comfort she had. The evening sun has at last set on this long and useful life. Grandma Boling’s name will long be remembered.
