CLARENCE McDONALD, Winterset

Clarence McDonald, 92, died Jan. 29, 2005, at Winterset Care Center South.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Feb. 2) at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset with the Rev. Bill Branson officiating. Burial was at North McDdonald Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Madison County.

Clarence McDonald was born Dec. 17, 1912, in Madison County to Fletcher and Carrie Violet McDonald. He was first married to Violet A. (Allen) McDonald, who preceded him in death in 1976. He later married Elsie Barger Riley on June 20, 1985, in Ankeny. Clarence had worked for Solar Aircraft and Look Magazine in Des Moines before he started farming and doing custom farm work. He spent the majority of his life in Madison County. He also resided in DeSoto for 12 years prior to moving to Winterset eight years ago. He was a member of Farm Bureau and the Winterset First United Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet; one daughter, Vicki McDonald; an infant brother, Roy McDonald; and two sisters, Gladys Nelson and Pearl Beed.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie, of Winterset; two sons, Ivan McDonald of Des Moines and Thomas McDonald of Waverly; two daughters, Jill Hoffman of Huntley, Ill., and Karen Beckman of Watertown, Wis.; one stepdaughter, Carol Winchester of Urbandale; three sisters, Blanche Hart of Phoenix, Ariz., Alberta Binns of Sugerland, Texas, and Edda Creger of Des Moines; and six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Clarence McDonald, 92, died Saturday, January 29 at Winterset Care Center South. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church in Winterset with internment at North McDonald Cemetery. Visitation is from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Clarence was born in Madison County on December 17, 1912. He was a farmer and also worked at Solar Aircraft and Look Magazine in Des Moines. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winterset. After retirement from farming he enjoyed traveling and woodworking. His family was very dear to him and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher and Carrie McDonald; his first wife of 38 years, Violet Allen; and infant daughter, Vicki; and infant brother, Roy; and sisters, Gladys Nelson and Pearl Veed.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie; children, Karen Beckman (Bud) of Watertown, Wisconsin, Ivan McDonald (Barb) of Des Moines, Jill Hoffman (Dick) of Huntley, Illinois, Tom McDonald (Cindy) of Waverly, Illinois; stepdaughter, Carol Winchester (David) of Urbandale; sisters Blanche Hart of Phoenix, Arizona, Alberta Binns of Sugarland, Texas, Edna Creger of Des Moines; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Winterset Presbyterian Church or the Winterset Chaplaincy Program.
