L. "Shorty" Thompson, Dexter

Leon "Shorty" E. Thompson, 84, a long-time resident of Dexter, died July 9, 2003, at Winterst Care Center North.

Memorial services were held Friday, July 11, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Dexter with Pastor Donna Vaughan officiating. Burial of the cremains was at Dexter Cemetery with military rites performed by Dexter American Legion Post 419.

Shorty Thompson was born Nov. 7, 1918, to Charles and Dora (Walter) Thompson of Dean. A resident of Dexter for most of his life, he was a self-employed trucker. He also was a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office in Dexter for 43 years, retiring in 1992. Shorty, a United States Army veteran of World War II was a member of Dexter American Legion Post 419.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Orpha; four brothers, Verl, Kenneth, Lyle and Charles; a sister, Maxell Murphy; a granddaughter, Valerie Thompson; a grandson, Rodney Watts; and a great-grandson, Josh Cook.

He is survived by a son, Robert Thompson of Des Moines; three daughters, Dorothy Cushman of Ankeny, Faye Watts of Stuart and Janice Cook of Winterset, two brothers Gaylord Thompson of Dexter and Gale Thompson of Waukee; two sisters, Nila West of Winterset and Pat Green of Post Falls, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
