Douglas Taylor, 84, of Winterset died Sept. 13, 2001, of cancer at Mercy Hospice of Johnston.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 17, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset with the Rev. Jim Howland officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by V.F.W. Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.
Douglas Taylor was born Dec. 20, 1916, to William and Agnes (Wood) Taylor of Quincy, Mass. He was educated in the Brooklyn, N.Y. School District. On Sept. 23, 1941, he married Eleanor C. Schaeffer in New York, N.Y.
Following World War II, of which he was an Army veteran, he and his wife moved to Atlantic where they resided for seven years. In 1952, they moved to Webster Townshisp in Madison County where they farmed until his retirement in 1983. They then moved to Winterset.
Douglas was a member of Farm Bureau, the Soil Conservation Commission, the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset (serving as an elder for six years and as church treasurer since 1986) and a county coordinator for AARP. He received a volunteer award from Gov. Terry Branstad in the mid 1990s.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Winterset; a nephew, Ray Haber of Northport, N.Y.; and a niece Jill Atkins of Swampscott, Mass.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
