JOHN NEWTON GORDON - ALTERNATE

John Newton Gordon was born in Ripley county, Indiana, June 16, 1835, and departed this life at his home in Winterset, Iowa, May 7, 1915, after an illness of several months, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 21 days.

The deceased came with his parents, Irvin and Sarah Gordon, to Madison county, Iowa, in 1852. So for almost sixty three years his life was identified with the growth, prosperity and advancing civilization of this community.

June 10, 1856, he was united in marriage to Rachel Charlotte Clark, and they located on their prairie farm one and one-half miles west of Winterset. Here they experienced all the toils, hardships and pleasures of pioneer life. While living on this farm their entire family of ten children were born. Albert T. of Athena, Ore., Morgan W.,Wessington, S.D., Ella and Lily dying in infancy, Newton D., of Indianola, Iowa, Nelson C. of Caldwell, Ida., Mrs. James Turner, C. William, J. Arthur of this city, and Clarence., who died in infancy. His home was open to receive everyone in need of shelter and in the early days the benighted wanderer on the prairie always found a place to rest. After living a short time on a farm southeast of Winterset they moved to town, where he spent the remainder of his life.

He leaves a devoted wife, one brother, Johnathan A, the last of the family, besides six sons, one daughter, twenty-six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of friends to honor his memory. All the children were present except Albert, Morgan and Nelson.

The funeral occurred Sunday, May 9, from the home, 807 East Filmore street, and was attended by a large concourse of friends, as no man in the county was more widely known. The services were conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis of the Church of Christ, assisted by Rev. Stewart of Indianola and Rev. Millholland of Greenfield. Interment was made in Rock City cemetery.
