Mr. Elmer Ergenbright, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Ergenbright died of typhoid fever, at his home near Winterset, Wednesday, Sept. 30th. The funeral was held in the Church of Christ at this place, of which he was a member. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Frederick Schwab.

Elmer had not been in good health for the past two years and about four weeks ago was stricken with typhoid fever. Through his sickness he was very hopeful, but was ready when the summons came. Until within the last year he had resided with his parents a mile north of here when in February they moved to a farm near Winterset, where they have lived since.

He had many friends in this community as was shown by the beautiful floral tributes placed upon the casket, and sympathy shown the bereaved ones. He leaves a father, mother, two brothers and three sisters besides a host of friends to mourn his departure. The father, mother and one brother being unable to attend the funeral. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones.

Elmer Ergenbright was born in Madison county near Winterset, June 20, 1877, and died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Ergenbright in Union township on Sept. 30, 1903. He was the eldest son of seven children and leaves to mourn his departure besides his father and mother, two brothers, Will and Fred, three sisters, Mattie, Bertha and Nora.

About five weeks ago he was stricken with typhoid fever and all that medical skill and kind and loving hearts could render were his constant attendants during his illness.

Thus closes the brief earthly career of a noble young man. Elmer was of a quiet disposition and was devoted to his parents, brothers and sisters. In the charmed circle of his father's house he found that which ministered to his brotherly nature. He lived enjoying the esteem of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He died triumphantly, expressing the conviction that it would be well with his soul. So after five years of service as a follower of his Master, he has gone into the beyond.

As we extend our sympathy to the bereaved family in this hour we hear in the dawning of the eternal morning the voice of him who says "I am the resurrection and the life."

The funeral was held in the church at Barney on Saturday and the interment took place in the Barney cemetery.

The Ergenbright Bereavements

Short sketches have from time to time been given concerning the sickness and death in this estimable family, and the writer will in this article endeavor to give the details as nearly as possible.

The first death was that Elmer Ellsworth, aged 26 years, who was taken sick with typhoid and died September 30, 1903. The remainder of the family consisting of the father, mother, two sons and three daughters were stricken down with the same disease and on October 18, 1903, the mother died at the age of 49 years, on October 29 Bertha, aged 20 years, died and two days later, Mattie, aged 24 years, died making four deaths in the family within one month. Thus are left the father, two sons, aged 19 and 22, and a little daughter, Nora, aged 11 years as the remaining members of the grief stricken home. Pearl, the youngest of the family, died with measles just about five years ago.

Most of the family were born and spent their early life on a farm 1 mile north of Barney in Walnut Township and moved to their present residence 3 miles east of Winterset last March. The family was among the most highly respected in their community, and they have hosts of friends who mourn with them in their sore bereavement, and the memory of the deceased ones will live long in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

The last sad rights were held in the Christian church of Barney and conducted by Reverend Frederick Schwaib of Des Moines and the remains entered side-by-side in the Barney cemetery. The funeral of the two sisters was held the same day, 12 young girlfriends of the deceased acting as pall bearers, and the burial made side-by-side in the same grave.
