Joseph Boyce of Winterset, member of a well known family in this community, died Sunday, April 7, 1968, at Memorial hospital here. He was 74 years of age.
Mr. Boyce was born in Douglas township Feb. 8, 1894, a son of Marcus J. and Grace Smith Boyce. His life was spent in this community, with the exception of a few years in Des Moines, and 28 years in California.
During his life-time he engaged in farming and worked as an automobile mechanic here. In California, he was an employee of the state.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian church in Winterset, serving as an elder, and Sunday school teacher. He was also active in Boy Scout work.
Mr. Boyce was married in 1916 to Flossie Poindexter, who survives him. In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Agan of Manhattan, Kan.; and two sons, Walter Boyce of Cleveland, O., and Earl Boyce of Oxnard, Calif. An infant son died in 1917.
He also leaves three brothers, Earnest Boyce of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Hugh Boyce and Dan Boyce of Winterset; four sisters, Mrs. Floyd Thomas of Winterset, Mrs. Paul Stringham of Lawrence, Kan., Mrs. Floyd Bunnell of Cedar Falls, and Mrs. Harry Jenks of Palo Alto, Calif.; in addition to six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 10 a.m. from the First United Presbyterian church in Winterset, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. John E. Fink, and the Rev. Dr. Robert Caldwell of Des Moines. Burial will be at the Winterset Cemetery.
