World War I Veteran; Was Winterset City Clerk For 10 Years
Owen E. DeMar, a well-known resident of Madison county for many years, died Thursday, April 28, at Veterans hospital in Des Moines, after an extended illness. He was 64 years of age.
Mr. DeMar was born in Polk county, July 17, 1895, a son of William G. and Hattie Fisher DeMar. Practically all his life had been spent in Madison county.
As a young man he attended the Capital City Commercial college in Des Moines, and later was employed as an auditor by the Standard Oil company. He also engaged in the insurance business for three years, and from 1931 to 1941 served as city clerk of Winterset. In recent years he had engaged in farming near Peru.
He was married June 25, 1925, to Minnie Tyer, who survives him.
Mr. DeMar was affiliated with the Bethel United Presbyterian church in Winterset. He served in the United States armed forces during World War I, and for 35 years was a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was active in the Farm Bureau.
In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves two sister, Vivian DeMar of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Mrs. David R. Jones of Columbus City.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Richards Funeral home in charge of the Rev. Robert A. Owens of the Winterset Christian church, and Howard Church, Bethel United Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery, with grave-side services conducted by Green-Rogers Post of the American Legion.
