Bess Clampitt, Earlham

A funeral service was held June 5 at Earlham United Methodist Church for Bess M. Clampitt of Earlham, who died June 2 at Madison County Memorial Hospital at the age of 80.

Born in Madison county on April 17, 1902, she was the daughter of William and Sadie Ford Smith. She grew up on the family farm near Winterset and attended Madison county schools.

On Jan. 25, 1921 she married D. Frank Clampitt, who died in 1957.

Following her husband's death, she attended the American Institute of Business and later worked as a secretary for the Des Moines YMCA until her retirement in 1974.

Mrs. Clampitt was a member of the Earlham United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women, a member of the Sorosis Club of Earlham and served as county chairman of the Madison County Federated Women's Clubs from 1956-57. She was also a member of the Earlham Chapter of OES and Past Matrons Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers. Survivors include two daughters; Shirley Anker of Earlham and Barbara Vaughn of Adel; three sisters, Helen Wright of Granger and Laura Black and Gertrude Shoemaker of Winterset; 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Walter Sieck officiated at the funeral service. Burial was in Winterset cemetery.

Bess M. Clampitt, the daughter of William and Sadie ford Smith, was born April 17, 1902 in Madison County, Iowa. She passed away June 2, 1982 at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, Iowa.

She grew up on the family farm near Winterset and attended Madison County schools.

On January 25, 1921 she was united in marriage to D. Frank Clampitt. Two daughters blessed their marriage. Frank passed away in 1957.

Following her husband death, Bess attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She later worked as a secretary for the Des Moines Y.M.C.A. until her retirement in 1974.

Bess was a member of the Earlham Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women, a member of the Sorosis Club of Earlham and has served as County Chairman, 1956-1957 for Madison County Federated Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Earlham Chapter of O.E.S. and Past Matrons Club. She taught Sunday school for many years and was also Sunday school superintendent.

Survivors include her loving daughters, Mrs. Shirley Anker of Earlham and Mrs. Barbara Vaughn of Adel, Iowa; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Wright of Granger, Mrs. Laura Black of Winterset and Mrs. Gertrude Shoemaker of Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers.

Services were conducted at the Earlham United Methodist Church on June 5, 1982 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Walter Sieck officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Donna Miller, organist. Casket bearers were Joel Barnhouse, Donal Brandt, Gene Englin, Gordon Iverson, James Shoemaker, Lawrence Smith, David Vaughn, Dennis Vaughn, Walter Wee Mott. Interment was in Winterset Cemetery at Winterset, Iowa.
