Funeral services for Guy Edwin Fogler, 104, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 14 at the Patterson United Methodist Church. Rev. Clarence Lautt will officiate. Burial will be at Montpelier Cemetery, Patterson with graveside services by the American Legion.
Mr. Fogler died Tues., Nov. 12, 1991, at Winterset Care Center North, where he was a resident.
He was born on August 22, 1887 near Patterson. His parents were Lyman and Laura Jane Potter Fogler. He was a graduate of Western Normal College, Shenandoah, and taught in the Patterson Independent School, where one of his students was Fern Frey, who he later married on March 29, 1919.
During World War I he was stationed in France with the Army's 69th Aartillery and at the time of his death, he was the oldest World War I veteran in Madison County.
He farmed east of Patterson until 1968 when he and his wife retired and moved to Winterset. In 1981, they were selected to be the king and queen of the Covered Bridge Festival.
Mr. Fogler was a member and president of the Patterson Consolidated School Board for several years and also served as treasurer for 17 years. He was the Crawford Township assessor for several years. He was a lifelong member of the Patterson Methodist Church, was a member of the Green-Rogers American Legion Post #184 and of the former Barracks #1339.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, one brother and one granddaughter.
Survivors, include a son, Frank Fogler of Atchison, Kan.; two daughters, Genevieve Fogler of Urbana, Ill., and Norma Ziemann of Van Meter; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
