Lawrence Hooper, Winterset

Lawrence E. Hooper, 77, of Winterset died June 4, 2001, from complications of surgery at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Thursday, June 7, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset with Pastor Steve Koch officiating. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, June 6) from noon to 8 p.m. at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery with military services performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Lawrence Hooper was born May 1, 1924, to Clarence and Bessie (Barr) Hooper of Winterset. He married Luella Loken on June 8, 1945 in Winterset. A veteran of World War II and a lifetime resident of Winterset, he was a retired law enforcement officer and Winterset street commissioner. Lawrence had worked as a law enforcement officer for 24 years, starting with the Winterset Police Department in the early 1950s. He served as deputy sheriff of Madison County from 1956 to 1963, then served as Winterset's chief of police from 1963-1974. From 1974 to 1989, he served as Winterset street commissioner. He was a member of American Legion Post 184 and St. Paul Lutheran Church, both in Winterset, and was a former member (charter member) of the Winterset Kiwanis Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

He is survived by his wife, Luella, of Winterset; a son, Mike Hooper of Winterset; a daughter, Linda Wight of Fountain Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
