MARY ELIZABETH McDONALD: Second Fatality on New Highway By-Pass

Mary Elizabeth McDonald, 81, of Route 4, Winterset was killed Sunday, July 31, 1977, in a two-car collision at the intersection of new Highway 169 and 92 west of Winterset.

She was the second fatality within a two mile section of the highway in the past three months, the time it has been officially opened for traffic.

Mrs. McDonald was thrown from her car onto the pavement. She was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services for Mary McDonald are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 4, from First United Methodist Church of Winterset, Rev. Paul Hann officiating. Burial will be made at Winterset Cemetery.

Mrs. McDonald was born January 25, 1896, at Stinesville, Indiana, the daughter of John and Candace Harrell Cooter. Her marriage to M. Earl McDonald took place March 10, 1915, in Winterset.

A resident of Madison County since childhood, Mrs. McDonald was a resident of Rural Route 4 in Douglas Township. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter, 180, a Worthy Matron since 1962.

Her activites extended to the presidency of the Methodist Women and membership in the Current Topic Club, Fidelis Sunday School Class, Questers Group and Iris Club.

Survivors include three sons, Marion of Indianola, Kenneth of St. Charles and Raymond of Winterset; two daughters, Mrs. Dan (Phyllis) Thomas and Mrs. Jim (Ann) Raftis, both of Des Moines; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Glenn (Lora) Foster of Winterset; and a half-brother, Harrell Ruth of Sherman Oaks, California.

Mrs. McDonald was preceded in death by her husband in February, 1953, her parents, step-father, and a sister, Katherine Cooter.
