James Berl Smith, 79, died January 3, 1993 at his home. Funeral services will be held Thurs., Jan 7 at Worthington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Koughn and the Rev. John Shaull officiating. Burial will be at Worthington Church Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born at Snyder, Okla. on November 29, 1913, to Elijah and Nora (Cook) Smith. He married M. Lucile Stanley on December 16, 1945, in Earlham. A farmer, he lived most of his life in and around Madison County. He was a member of the V.F.W Post No. 8142 and the Worthington Methodist Church. He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran.
Preceding him in death were his father; a son, Richard L. Smith; two brothers, Leonard and John Smith; and a sister, Lillian Rush.
Surviving relatives include his mother; his wife; a son, S. James of Earlham; four daughters, Vera M. Smith of Newton; Janet Loomis of Winterset; Nancy Brant of Marshalltown and Vanna S. Anderson or Corwith; a brother, Lloyd L. Smith of Windsor, Mo.; two sisters, Lela Marsh of Riverside, Calif. and Merle Bruce of Windsor, Mo.; and 16 grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the Winterset Community Educational Foundation.
