LOYAL WERTS, Winterset

Loyal Werts, 93, of Winterset died Feb. 28, 2006, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Winterset with the Rev. Jim Howland officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.

Loyal Werts was born March 5, 1912, in rural Madison County to George and Alma (Anderson) Werts and attended country school at Penn No. 6. On Nov. 6, 1937, he married Phyllis Frey in Maryville, Mo. Loyal and his wife farmed south of Earlham for over 50 years. While farming, he was an active member of Madison County Farm Bureau (50 plus years) where he served as president for many years. He also belonged to the Forrester Club. Loyal and his wife moved to Winterset following their retirement in 1998.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jim Werts, and a brother, Earl Werts.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Winterset; three daughters, Lucile Wycoff of Winterset, Dorothy Smith of Grinnell and Carolyn Hibbs of Vinton; two sons, Dick Werts of Earlham and Harry Werts of Des Moines; and 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.
