Paul Flanery, Winterset

Paul Joseph Flanery, 79, of Winterset died of a heart ailment June 2, 2002, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. today (Wednesday, June 5) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military graveside services performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Paul Flanery was born April 13, 1923, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Edward Franklin and Catherine (Wiesensee) Flanery. He grew up in South Dakota, living in various towns until moving to Mason City. He obtained his pharmacy degree from South Dakota State College in Brookings. On Jan. 16, 1943, he married Betty Jean Corbin in Sioux Falls. In 1962, Paul moved to Winterset where he owned and operated Flanery Pharmacy until 1978. He worked for Montross Pharmacy and then did relief pharmacy work until 1996. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Winterset American Legion Post 184, V.F.W. Post 8142 and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by a son, Dan Flanery (wife Deb) of Stewartville, Minn.; a daughter, Nancy McKinght (husband Vern) of Osceola; a brother Orville Flanery of Sioux Falls, S.D.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
