Gerald S. Brittain, Winterset

Services for Gerald S. Brittain, 69, former Winterset resident, who died December 18 at Corning, were held Thursday, Dec. 21 at the United Methodist Church at Corning with the Rev. Bob Epperson of Winterset officiating. Burial was at the North McDonald Cemetery near Winterset.

Born April 9, 1920 at Winterset, Mr. Brittain was the son of Lloyd and Mamie Florence Hendricks Brittain. He attended school at Winterset and on July 30, 1937 was married to Emma Maxine Flesher at Bethany, Mo.

In 1944,he entered the Army at the Camp Dodge induction station and served in the European Theater and received decorations including the Bronze Star. He was held as a prisoner of war for some time.

Mr. Brittain and his family moved to Corning in 1956 and opened Brittain's Auto Parts Store. They remained in business until 1964. He was president of the Corning Chamber of Commerce in 19061 and is a past commander of the American Legion post.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jackie Lee; two brothers, one sister and a brother-in-law.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Maxine Brittain of Corning; his two sons, Wayne and his wife, Betty of Joplin, Mo. and Randy and his wife Diane of Centerville; his four daughters, Judy Stockfleth and her husband Weldon of Omaha, Neb., Sharon Scott and her husband Ed, and Linda Ashby all of Corning, and Vicki Hickman and her husband Randy of Nevada; 17 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a sister Cleo Kirkland of Winterset; and a sister-in-law, Nina Brittain.
