Dow J. Brittain, Winterset

Graveside Services for Dow J. Brittain, 74, Winterset, who died July 6 at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, were held Tuesday morning, July 10 at the North-McDonald Cemetery.

Born in Madison County on June 11, 1910, he was the son of John and Clara Sole Brittain. He had retired from farming in 1971 and was an army veteran of World War II. On June 10, 1946, he was married to Dortha Juanita Gray in Winterset.

Survivors include a son, Austin Brittain of Winterset; stepsons, Robert Shoesmith of Peoria, Ill., and Roger Shoesmith of Farmington, Ill.; daughters, Clara Garrett of Des Moines and Thelma Ward of Little Rock, Ark.; a brother, Alfred of Columbia, Mo.; sisters, Margaret Hopper of Wichita, Kan., Grace Carlson of Minnesota, Jane Armstrong of Mound, Minn., Isabelle Langfeldt of Minnesota, and Alice Sewell of Webster Grove, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
