Charles Hugh Cox

The funeral services of Charles Hugh Cox were held at the Penn Center M. E. church on last Thursday, Oct. 7, at 2:30 p.m. A large gathering of people came to pay their last respects to him. There was singing by the Penn Center, M. E. church quartet. The pastor, B. H. Morse, preached from the text found in I Cor. 15: 49, "As we have ;borne the image of the earthly, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly." The main thought was, as we have been born into a material world, we must be born of a spiritual world to fulfill the meaning of the text."

Charles Hugh Cox was born on the old homestead in Madison county Oct 23, 1883, and died at Des Moines, Oct 5, 1920, aged 36 years, 11 months and 18 days. He was married to Miss Millie Patterson of Prairie City, Ia., April 11, 1906. To this union were born three children, Bernice, 13 years, Hazel, 8 years, and Gladys, 6 years. Besides these three children are left to mourn his untimely death, a loving wife, devoted father and mother and two brothers and two sisters, Ed of Earlham, Mrs. Linda Marston of Dexter, Ia., Everett of Earlham, Ia., and Mrs. Grace Stegell also of Earlham, Ia. and a host of other friends and relatives. Charles was converted and pointed the Penn Center church at the age of 14 years. He was familiarly known, having spent his entire life in Madison county. He was a loving husband, a devoted father and a good neighbor and friend. What more could be said of any man?

Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cox were shocked and saddened on Wednesday morning to learn of his death on the preceding evening at 10:20 at Lutheran Hospital as the result of heart trouble following an operation for appendicitis. This operation occurred September 21 and was apparently successful, but more recent symptoms became unfavorable and death came Tuesday night from the assigned cause of acute dilation of the heart from myacarditis. His loss is a grievous one to the wife and three children as well as the parents and brothers and sisters.
