George W. Cox, Missouri

George W. Cox, 81, of Strafford, Mo., died Jan. 26, 2001, in Cox Medical Center North in Springfield, Mo.

Funeral services were held at Klingner Mortuary Chapel in Springfield with the Rev. Kenneth Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery with military rites.

George Cox was born April 3, 1919, to Herman and Beulah (Light) Cox of Winfield, Kan. He was the great-grandson of Eli Cox, the Madison County covered bridge builder. He resided in Winterset during his younger years, graduating from Winterset High School in 1937. During his high school years and until he entered the service, he was employed by Sweeney Auto Company in Winterset. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. In 1973 he moved to Strafford Mo., and opened the "76" Truck Stop. He operated the truck stop until his retirement. George was a member of the Strafford United Methodist Church and V.F.W. Post 7214 in Strafford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothy Decker Cox.

He is survived by three sisters, Iva Frederick of Montezuma, Arleta Bruns of Eldridge and Rebecca Paton of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Rosalie Decker of Strafford; several cousins, including Lee Cox of Winterset and Dr. Burton D. Cox of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Verlyn G. Killion of Columbus, Kan., both former residents of Winterset; and several nieces and nephews.
