A lifetime resident of Madison County and active member of the Winterset community, Harry Howell Smith, died Saturday, August 30, 1975 at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. He was 87 years old. His residence was 902 E. Court in Winterset.
Mr. Smith was born October 25, 1887 near Van Meter, Iowa, the son of James Sidney Smith and Mary Frances Howell. His marriage to Harriet Louise Gray took place June 18, 1919 at the home of her parents near St. Charles, Iowa. The only child of the couple, a son, Harold Laurence Smith, was killed in World War II near Luxembourg.
A contractor and builder, Mr. Smith was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church of Winterset and a member of both the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges for over 50 years. He was a WW I veteran, a charter member of the Green-Rogers Post of the American Legion and a member of the Winterset Lions Club. He served on the Winterset Park Board for many years. Mr. Smith graduated from Simpson College with a degree in business education.
Surviving Mr. Smith is his wife, Harriet Smith of Winterset. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ryman and sister Nellie.
Other relatives include three nieces, Esther Schmidt of Springfield, Ill.; Phyllis Veline of York, Nebr.; Frances Ohrvall of Independence, Mo. and a number of cousins.
Funeral services for Harry Howell Smith were conducted Tuesday, September 2, 1975 at 2:30 p.m. from Collins Funeral Home in Winterset, the Rev. Paul Bousfield and Dr. Walter A. Samp officiating. Masonic services were included at the funeral home observances and military graveside rites were conducted at the interment at Winterset Cemetery.
