Page 5Obituary of Thomas Read (Reed)
Thomas Read was born in Bedfordshire, England, October 8, 1835, and departed this life April 2, 1913, aged 77 years, 5 months and 24 days. At the age of nineteen he came with his parents to America, arriving in Winterset July 8, 1855.
Shortly after the beginning of the civil war, October 11, 1861, he enlisted in Co. I. 4th Iowa cavalry and served his country faithfully until the close of the war, reaching his home in Winterset August 26, 1865. While home on veteran furlough he was united in marriage to Ann Elizabeth Bardrick March 27, 1864. To this union were born five children, two girls and three boys, little John dying at the age of six years. The living children are: Mary J. Lowden, Anna H. Bowlsby, Rev. Charles W. Read and Asahel E. Read.
He was a devoted, affectionate husband, a loving father, not only to his own children, but to his two granddaughters, Edith and Bessie Bowlsby, for whom he so kindly cared in their need and helplessness.
In the year 1874 he was converted and joined the M. E. church, ever remaining a faithful, devoted christian, working arduously for the welfare of his Master's cause. For years he was a trustee and official member of the Bethel church of Scott township, which he supported and loved so much. In 1903 he professed sanctification which experience he always exemplified in heart and life. He was a member of the Madison County Holiness association since 1904. He was triumphant to the end of his earthly life often praising God on his sick bed. Our loss is his eternal gain, for it is written, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
He leaves to mourn his death a faithful wife, two sons, two daughters, one brother, Ezra Read of Topeka, Kans., one sister, Eliza Rhoades of Winterset; twelve grandchildren and a host of friends.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. In charge of Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt, assisted by Rev. E. E. Williams of St. Charles and E. R. Zeller.
