Death of John Marshall Pitzer

John Marshall Pitzer, former resident of Madison county died at his home in Altoona county, Florida Sunday morning August 19th, at the age of 91 years. He had been ill for a long time.

Mr. Pitzer was born in Fairfield, Iowa, June 6, 1843, but moved with his parents in early youth to Winterset, where lived until moving to Florida, in January, 1882. When twenty years of age he enlisted, immediately after the death of an older brother at the siege of Vicksburg, in Company D 1st Iowa Calvary, with which company he served until the close of the war, and of which he became the last surviving member.

On February 14, 1867, he was married to Julia S. White, also of Winterset, and to them were born six children, of whom three died in early childhood, while the family still lived in Iowa.

On moving to Florida more than fifty years ago, he settled at Ravenswood, where he lived ever since, and where for nearly forty years, he has waited the time when he might rejoin the wife of his youth, who died in 1895. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Lulu May McEwen, also died some years ago. A son, M. R. Pitzer, and a daughter Delia E. Pitzer both of Altoona, Florida still survive. He also leaves four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Altoona Baptist church by the Rev. A. F. Carr of the Umatilla Presbyterian church assisted by the Rev. Clovis Brantley, pastor.
