FATHER PAUL BARRUS, Texas

Father Paul Wells Barrus, 97, of Plano, Texas, died Jan. l, 2000, at his residence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Jan. 6, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Plano. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Winterset Cemetery.

Father Barrus was born June 29, 1902 in Winterset. He was a descendant of Asbury and Mary Wells Clopton, pioneer settlers of Madison County. He received his bachelor's and master's degree from Drake University in Des Moines where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Ph.D degree at the University of Iowa. For 27 years, he taught English and Latin at East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas.

After completing his teaching career, he became a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. Father Barrus served the parishes of Immaculate Conception in Grand Prairie, Texas, St. Paul the Apostle in Richardson, Texas, transferring to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Plano in 1997.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ted Dickey Funeral Home in Plano and Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
