Mildred Hoskinson Wood, Winterset

Funeral services for Mildred Hoskinson Wood, 77, were held January 24 at First United Methodist Church and January 25 at Creston United Methodist Church. She died of a heart ailment Tues., Jan. 22 at Madison County Memorial Hospital.

She was born November 7, 1913 at Prescott to Harry I. and Daisy (Boyer) Putnam. She attended Carl township rural schools, graduated from Indianola High School and completed the normal training course at Simpson College in 1932. She married Robert Elmer Hoskinson, who died in 1932, and then married Howard W. Wood from Indianola April 23, 1983. She taught school nine years at Corbin, Gray and Stuart schools, and then worked at the Creston News Advertiser 1956-1979.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset where she was active in the Fidelis Sunday School class and was secretary for two years in the Women's Society. She was affiliatied with the Winterset Art Center and Current Topic Club and was a long-time member of the Iowa Poetry Association, having many poems published in the annual brochure "Lyrical Iowa". She wrote an extensive biography of George Washington Carver, which appeared in the Madisonian, entitled "A Star in Winterset's Crown", and later was compiled into a book "George Washington Carver: His Midwest Connections", published by the Madison County Historical Society.

Surviving are her husband, Howard; a daughter, Robina Reeves of Eureka Springs, Ark.; two sons, Robert of Winterset and Andrew of Indianapolis; a brother, Francis Putnam of Creston; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Hill of Zion Cemetery.
