Donald Palmer, Winterset

Donald L. Palmer, 84, of Winterset died of cancer June 7, 2005, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Don Frank officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.

Don Palmer was born April 27, 1921, on a farm near Parker, S.D., to Loman Lee and Ethel (McKinney) Palmer. He graduated from Macksburg High School in 1938. On Jan 31, 1944, he married Wanda Neal in Princeton, Mo. Don farmed for most of his life near Macksburg and Winterset. He also sold Lucas Feed for 10 years and was the Madison County weed commissioner for nine years. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, a World War II veteran of the United States Army, and a member of American Legion Post 184 of Winterset.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Max Palmer; one grandson, Jonathan Palmer; and triplet granddaughters, Faith, Hope and Kylie Davis.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda, of Winterset; two sons, Ron Palmer of Cumming and Steve Palmer of Winterset; one daughter, Connie Davis of Glenwood; two sisters, Lois Howard of Runnells and Helen Goad of Tigard, Ore.; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or Middle River Hospice, both of Winterset.
