Fred D. Brownell, a well-known farmer who had lived in Madison county for 80 years, died at Memorial hospital in Winterset Thursday, June 2, 1955. He had been ill at the hospital since May 13.
Mr. Brownell was 86 years of age at his death. He was a native of Indiana, where he was born near Lowell on July 25, 1868. In 1875 he came to Madison county with his parents and two brothers. He graduated from the Winterset high school in 1888.
He was married to Armina Bertholf at Winterset on Sept. 19, 1900. They made their home on a farm southwest of Winterset in the Ord community.
Over a long period of years Mr. Brownell was a leader in his community. He was a charter member of the Madison County Farm Bureau, serving as president, director, and treasurer. He was a charter member of the Farmers' Cooperative association, in which he was a director for many years. He was also a member of the Ord Church of Christ in Christian Union, holing several offices in the church and Sunday school. For many years he was treasurer of the Washington school board in Lincoln township.
Surviving are his wife; and a niece, Mrs. Fleta Brownell Woodruff.
