Viola Christy Swinehart, 93, of Winterset died of complications of a stroke October 20, 1998 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are today, October 23 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. Pastor Jon Gaul will officiate the service and burial will follow at the Greenfield Cemetery.
She was born July 29, 1927 at Shannon City to Frederick and Sylvia Dell (Mowery) Ryan. She married George J. Swinehart on June 29, 1927 at Shannon City. She was a homemaker and had taught school until her marriage. She lived in Winterset 19 years coming from Creston. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Women, the Greater Community Hospital Guild in Creston, the Good Will Club in Shannon City, the WWI Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary in Creston, and the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant daughter, one brother and one sister.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Clyde and wife, Barbara of Creston, Raymond and wife, Chris of Eugene, Ore.; two daughters, Verla Hunt of Nevada and Velma Griffith and husband, Wayne of Winterset; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
