Thursday, June 13, 1907William Oliver Ludlow was born in Muscatine county, Iowa, Oct. 27th, 1840. He with his parents came to Madison county in 1856, where he has resided ever since except a few years spent in the west.
When the war broke out, he enlisted with Co. D., of the First Iowa Cavalry on September 5th, 1861, and was honorably discharged on February 16th, 1866.
He was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Fuller, November 1st, 1870. To them were born three children, one of whom, Elizabeth Rachel, died in infancy. The others, Carrie, who is one of the teachers in the Winterset schools, and Ernest, who graduated this year. Together with his wife, and two children mentioned above, he leaves to mourn their loss, one sister, Mrs. Margret Moore, her son Leonard, her two daughters, Mrs. Dora Sumner and Mrs. Marcella Evans, who lives in Oregon, Mrs. Moore's son Ben having passed on a few years ago.
He united with the Christian church when a young man, and later when the family returned from the west, his membership with the church here continued, at which time the whole family became related in church membership.
The funeral was held from the late home on Sunday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, E. E. Bennett. The G. A. R. were present in a body and had appropriate services in his honor.
He was sheriff of Madison county in 1874-1875. The following ex-sheriffs were present: D. G. Ratliff, J. R. Davis, John McAndrew, Jeff. Wheat, J. D. Roy; also John Docksteader, the present sheriff and A. L. Tullis, who was deputy under Ludlow. Also the following members of his company were present: W. R. Shriver, W. W. Wright, Z. S. Reed, G. C. Sackett and A. M. Benge.
