Martha J. Lucas died at the home of her brother Sunday. The funeral occurred Tuesday afternoon.
Martha J. Lucas was born near Springfield, Illinois on November 29, 1848, and came with her parents to Madison county in 1852 or 1853. She was the second of a family of ten children.
Her mother died when she was ten years of age. Her sister, older than herself having married, upon her rested the responsibility of her father’s home and the care of the family. She never left her father during his life time, but kept his home for him until his death about two years ago. She was of a retiring disposition and kept closely to her home.
She was a member of the Methodist church, having united with the church about 25 years ago. She was also a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps.
_______________________Coordinator's note: Transcribed as published. The mother died in 1867 per her gravestone so Martha was 15 and not 10 years old when she took over the household duties.
