Phoebe Jane Frederick

Phoebe Jane Frederick, 89, of Winterset died Friday, July 8, 2005, at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating.

A private family inurnment was held at Winterset Cemetery, Winterset, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church (309 E. Jefferson St. Winterset, Iowa 50273), Middle River Hospice (300 W. Hutchings St., Winterset, IA 50273) or Mercy Hospice (5820 Winwood Dr., Johnston, IA 50131-1651) Ochiltree Funeral Service and Aftercare in Winterset, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Phoebe was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph M. and Mabel (Mason) Nemecek. Her marriage to Robert O. Frederick took place on May 30, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Phoebe graduated from Coe College in 1937 and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. The day after graduation, she went to work at Inter Ocean Re Insurance Company in Cedar Rapids where she worked for four years while Bob was in law school and getting established in his law practice in Winterset. She was born and raised in Cedar Rapids and lived there 25 years before moving to Winterset in June of 1941 as a new bride.

Phoebe was a homemaker most of her life. She served on the Winterset Hospital board and served on the Winterset Library board for 32 years. She was a member of the PEO and Progressive Study Club, both for over 50 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist and United Methodist Women of Winterset and was also a member of Friends of the Library and the Madison County Historical Society. She was a former member of Eastern Star.

She is survived by her two sons, Ronald A. Frederick and wife Marie, of Temecula, Calif., and Steven R. Frederick and wife, Cheryl, of Saugerties, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Nancy E. Frederick of Raleigh N.C., and Sara J. Fisher and husband Shane of Murrieta, Calif.; a great-grandson, Nolan Fisher, and a great-granddaughter, Phoebe Fisher.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Robert O. Frederick, who died Oct.23, 2003.
